John Tapper, PhD
Managing Director

Tapper is a seasoned strategic marketing consultant who has specialized in helping clients solve their most challenging business problems for over 35 years.  He co-founded Mindfrog with Howard Ziment in 2011.

Prior to joining Mindfrog, Tapper was President of the Marketing Insights Practice at Kantar Health (was Cerner Enviza, now Oracle Lifesciences), the largest healthcare marketing research firm in the world.  At Kantar Health, he oversaw the successful integration of four leading marketing research consultancies, including Ziment Custom Research, TNS Healthcare Research, and the Mattson Jack Group.  Although this integration took place in 2008-09 during one of the most challenging global recessions ever, the practice grew revenues nearly 20%.   

 

Between 2001 and 2008, Tapper had served in a series of roles, including CEO, COO and Chief Methodologist of Ziment Custom, and Chief Strategy Officer of the Ziment Group (Ziment became Kantar Health).

 

Tapper’s core strengths include: 

INNOVATION IN MR METHODS, DELIVERY & OPERATIONS.  His strength lies in his ability take both proven and cutting-edge methods and use them to devise industry-changing innovation. During his tenure at Ziment\Kantar Health, he conceived, built and introduced such industry-changing innovations as Demand Calibration, Benchmark Discrete Choice, TAGZ, MESSAGEZ, and Virtual Clinic. 

 

Additionally, Tapper was at the forefront of bringing issue-oriented, story-based deliverables to the Healthcare Marketing Research community.  During his tenure at Ziment/Kantar Health, he developed and institutionalized a way of organizing and delivering marketing research-based insight that has led the industry in its move from data to insight.  

  

METHODOLOGIST AND MARKETING STRATEGIST.  Throughout his career, Tapper has been unusual in his ability to use complex models and statistics to solve problems while speaking clearly about the design and results from the work.  He has the unique combination of deep marketing science skill and business experience and acumen.  As a specialist in advanced methods, he has always been known for his focus on providing only what is needed, eschewing complexity for clarity.  

 

He has helped clients in the healthcare industry to improve their competitive position through the strategic, rigorous, and creative use of some of the most powerful techniques available in market research today. This includes multivariate approaches such as decision modeling, market segmentation, marketing-mix modeling, and data-display techniques such as perceptual and correspondence mapping, as well as qualitative and competitive intelligence approaches.  

 

These skills were honed during his days as a management consultant at Price WaterhouseCoopers where he served as acting Chief Marketing Officer to four emerging businesses created by Fortune 100 healthcare clients.  Prior to PWC, John was at Migliara/Kaplan during its heyday. Across all of these experiences, he has been involved in hundreds of engagements that helped clients launch and manage products facing all strategic situations, ranging from blockbusters to niche products to orphans and me-toos.  

 

Tapper holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with specializations in Psychology and Statistics, and a BA from the University of Colorado.  He resides in Chicago, IL with his wife Carolyn and has three children, David, Lauren and Adam.
